Once There Was Twice There Wasn't Fifty Turkish Folktales of Nasreddin Hodja eBook Michael Shelton Allyson Baldwin Reviews
Classic tales from further east than the USA retold so that the "moral" is clear and the story is entertaining and funny.
Pretty good.
Loses its charm quickly.
I remember reading Nasreddin Hodja stories as a child, though I didn't know what they were then. This book has brought the stories to expression beautifully, as it combines classic folk tales which are not available to English-speakers with a deep understanding of the culture in which they arose. Very glad to have the book as it illustrates for me new aspects of my adopted Turkish culture.
Humans who love wisdom recognize it in all religions. Among us live poet/prophets that may be rooted in the goodness of their Scriptures, but see through those Scriptures to the wise truths demonstrated in the life of their community. Such a poet/prophet is Nasreddin Hodja. Michael Sheldon makes the stories about him attractive and accessible to English speakers.
Why do I say this is the best book for navigating Turkish culture?
It is clearly not an anthropological study and you will not find any overt cultural teachings.
However, in each story you find our main character stuck in a dilemma unique to Turkish culture- maybe someone wants to borrow money, or you are a guest at a dinner party, or you are teaching a group, and on and on. Turkish culture requires certain responses. As a foreigner living in Turkey, I often find myself in situations in which my Turkish friends and neighbors all know the cues, but I am feeling clueless. Often I just offend them with my American response. Thanks to Shelton and Nasreddin Hodja I now recognize that much is going on underneath the surface, and I simply need to find culturally appropriate, relationally focused, clever ways to respond. I ask myself, "What would Nasreddin Hodja do?" (I say that a bit tongue in cheek.)
But for those not living in Turkey, I still recommend this book of tales. You will laugh and be amazed at the clever solutions the Hodja finds. Whether you are young or old, you will enjoy it. I read the tales to my kids for read aloud before bedtime, and we are often reminding each other of different stories that are appropriate to situations in which we find ourselves.
I wrote a more complete review here [...]
Part trickster, part pious devotee; sometimes as wise as Solomon, occasionally as foolish as the village idiot, Nasreddin makes his way through life with a combination of an agile wit, reliance on sheer luck and willingness to accept every circumstance just as it is. These stories teach us to look beyond outward appearances to the human values that reside much deeper in the heart. They invite us to abandon the lazy practice of relying on conventional points of view in favor of cultivating the ability to circle every circumstance in search of the perspective others have overlooked. Like Aesop's Fables, Nasreddin's stories certainly impart their own morals, but their deeper value lies in offering us a unique method for understanding the world and our lives in it.
Having lived and served in this culture of the world, it was fun to read these stories. You get a real glimpse into the cultures that are based on Honor-Shame.
